Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has hinted Manchester United are close to agreeing a new deal with goalkeeper David De Gea.
De Gea’s future has been the subject of uncertainty, with the Spaniard out of contract in a year’s time and talks between United and his representatives going on for the past 18 months.
But a breakthrough has been reached between both parties, with United boss Solskjaer suggesting an imminent announcement over the 28-year-old’s new contract extension.
De Gea sat out United’s pre-season tour opener against Perth Glory, in which Solskjaer’s side triumphed 2-0, but will play a part in tomorrow’s game against Leeds at the Optus Stadium.
“He’ll play and hopefully we can agree [a new deal] with David, as I’ve said a few times,” said Solskjaer.
Solskjaer admitted there will be some departures before transfer deadline day, as he continues to reshape his United squad.
The United boss, who has brought six centre-backs on tour and is chasing Harry Maguire, admitted he will have to trim that number before the new season.
The futures of Paul Pogba and Romelu Lukaku are also unclear, but Solskjaer said he is confident he will have a strong enough and committed squad of players when the transfer window closes on August 8.
“Of course, there’s a limit of players,” said Solskjaer. “Whoever performs will be part of the team and whoever doesn’t has a fight to get back in.
“The day we start the league, I’m sure everyone who’s here will give absolutely everything for Manchester United . We want a strong team with players who give everything.
“There are always rumours speculation about United players, but when the league starts we’ll batten down the hatches and stay as a team.”
