Arteta sent Aubameyang message, Ian Wright “fearful” of Man United, defender out of Arsenal’s Europa League squad

‘I feel really bad for Saliba’ – Arteta regrets leaving £27m defender out of Arsenal’s Europa League squad

Not named on the Gunners’ European roster, the young Frenchman cannot lend his side a hand in their moment of need against Dundalk

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has revealed that the decision to leave William Saliba out of the Gunners’ Europa League squad was a “hurtful” and regrettable one.

The young Frenchman was signed from Saint-Etienne in the summer of 2019 for £27 million (€30m/$35m) but spent last term back on loan at the Ligue 1 club.

It proved to be an injury-hit campaign for the youngster, and when he finally joined up with the London side on a full-time basis he was unable to immediately win over the confidence of the manager.

“I feel really bad for William Saliba,” Arteta explained. “Because we had so many central defenders, we decided to leave him out of the squad which was really hurtful for me to do.

“I was hoping that Pablo would be back in two weeks but he had a setback and then we don’t have Pablo and we don’t have William when he’s fit and available to play, but when you make those decisions, you can’t always think about every possible outcome.”

Barcelona are set to cut their wage bill by around £170million as they look to improve their financial situation.

That is according to EsportsRAC, who claim the Catalan club are set to talk to legal representatives of players regarding their salaries.

It suggests Barcelona may look to offload players, and one recently on Arsenal’s radar is former Liverpool midfielder Philippe Coutinho.

The Gunners were believed to be interested in the Brazilan international this summer, but he has established himself as a regular under new manager Ronald Koeman.

Arsenal legend ‘fearful’ of Manchester United

Ian Wright has admitted he is “fearful” of Manchester United ahead of today’s Premier League meeting at Old Trafford.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side head into the game off the back of an emphatic 5-0 win over RB Leipzig in the Champions League.

And former Arsenal striker Wright has suggested it could be a difficult afternoon for Mikel Arteta and his players.

“You look at Fred and (Scott) McTominay, that kind of gives them that kind of assurance,” he told Premier League Productions – via the Express.
