Frank Lampard to drop 3 Chelsea players as Midfielder debut is delayed

Hakim Ziyech is likely to have to wait a little longer for his Chelsea debut after picking up an injury in pre-season.

The Dutchman missed his side’s defeat against Liverpool on Sunday and is not expected to feature against Barnsley in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday.

Fellow new signing Ben Chilwell is also unlikely to feature in the midweek game, though he is back in training and moving closer to full fitness.

Chelsea will also be without Andreas Christensen – suspended after his red card against Liverpool – and Billy Gilmour, who is a long-term absentee after undergoing a knee operation.

Neville claims Chelsea approach was ‘acceptance’ of Liverpool’s superiority

Gary Neville has suggested Frank Lampard’s approach to Sunday’s game against Liverpool was an admittance that Chelsea “are not good enough”.

The Blues competed well in the first half, but Christensen’s red card changed the game and allowed Sadio Mane to score a second-half brace.

And former Manchester United defender Neville made his opinion clear on Chelsea’s tactical setup.

“The word I would describe Liverpool as is superior today,” he said on his podcast . “I felt that the mentality of the Liverpool performance was better.

“It felt like Chelsea had to change the way they play and their principles to compete.

“When you change the way you play it’s an acceptance that you are not good enough. You are telling your players.

“Sometimes players buy into it but if it goes wrong, it can damage them a little bit.

“I’m not saying Frank was wrong, he was trying to do it a different way. They were really passive and it’s a performance that wouldn’t have been allowed in a stadium full of fans.”

Three players who should be dropped after Liverpool loss

Chelsea’s first defeat of the Premier League season was an indication of the work Lampard still needs to do to build a team capable of challenging for the title.

There were plenty of positives against the champions, particularly in a disciplined and intelligent first-half performance.

But individual errors cost the Blues, most notably from Christensen and under pressure goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga.

We took a look at the three Chelsea players who should be taken out of the starting XI for next weekend’s game against West Brom.
