Arsenal to receive financial boost from Akpom sell-on clause with former gunner move

Arsenal to receive financial boost from Akpom sell-on clause with former gunner on brink of middlesbrough move.

Keep calm and sell-on

Arsenal have long been criticised for their poor handling of young talent. Players have departed the Emirates and made dramatic impacts on the European game.

The most notable being Serge Gnabry. The now German international moved to Werder Bremen for a meagre £4.5 million fee before ending up at Bayern Munich.

Since, Gnabry has become one of Europe’s best wide players and won the Champions League with the German champions against PSG.

Jeff Reine-Adelaide, a former Arsenal attacking midfielder left the club for French side Angers for £1.44 million. One year later and Lyon purchased the France-U21 international for £22.5 million. A significant fee and one Arsenal did benfit from. 10% was claimed by the Gunners and helped with moves for Kieran Tierney and David Luiz.

Akpom returns

The Greek media have reported that Chuba Akpom is now close to a return to England. Middlesbrough have had a €3 million bid accepted and Akpom will join Neil Warnock’s side.

Arsenal are in line to receive 40% of the fee and whilst small, could provide a small boost to Arsenal’s transfer plans this summer.

The sale of Akpom caused Arsenal some problems. FIFA handed the club a £35,000 fine for inserting a sell-on clause into the paperwork of Akpom’s sale and that of Joel Campbell.

The clause stated that were either player to be sold onto an English club, Arsenal would receive a greater portion of any transfer fee – something FIFA did not take kindly to. With Akpom in line to move to the north east, Arsenal will still acquire the agreed funds.

Arsenal have been hamstrung by their financial restrictions during the window. Whilst the signings of Willian, Ceballos (loan) and Gabriel have strengthened the team, without player sales the outlay needed to acquire either of their top targets seems unlikely.

The Gunners have been notably interested in Thomas Partey and Houssem Auoar. Both would require fees in the region of €50 million to acquire their services.

Therefore, any small improvement to the balance sheet be it a significant sale or minor sell-on bonus will be a welcomed with open arms.
