Arteta sets challenge for Pepe after opening day snub

Mikel Arteta has challenged club-record signing Nicolas Pepe to continue improving if he wants to get into the starting line-up.

The Ivory Coast international came on in the second half of Saturday’s 3-0 win at Fulham but an impressive performance from new signing Willian leaves him with plenty of work to do.

When asked about leaving Pepe out, Arteta said : “Well, it’s not [just] for Nico, I think it’s for the players that were on the bench and as well the ones that we had to leave at home.

“If they raise their levels then the performances of the team and club are going to improve and this is what I demand from them.

“I’m really happy with all the boys and the way they’re training, but selection is getting more complicated and with this new rule of just having only 18 players in the squad makes it very difficult.”

Arsenal ‘bid’ for Edouard

Arsenal have reportedly tabled a bid for Celtic striker Odsonne Edouard.

That is according to Ian McGarry of the Transfer Window podcast who claims that the Gunners are eager to sign the highly-rated striker before the end of the window.

He said: “It’s our information that there is an interest from Arsenal in Odsonne Edouard, the France [youth] international striker currently at Celtic.

“It’s our information that the initial offer from Arsenal was £15m, which was rejected by Celtic.

“That offer has since been increased to £20m with add-ons up to the value of another £2.5m.

“However, the payment would be staged over four years, something which of course we saw last season with the transfer of Kieran Tierney to the Emirates.”

Ian Wright has told Edu who Arsenal’s best summer signing will be – and it’s not Aouar or Partey

Ian Wright has urged Arsenal to get Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang signed to a new contract.

The Gunners captain is now into the final year of his deal at the Emirates Stadium and despite positive noises coming out of the club regarding an extension, there’s yet to be an official announcement.

Manager Mikel Arteta has said he is “really optimistic” that the club and the player will soon come to an agreement to extend his stay in north London.

“I can say I’m even more confident that at the end of last season. I’m really optimistic,” he said, speaking at his pre-match press conference ahead of the opening Premier League game against Fulham.

“I think they [Arsenal fans] can be pretty relaxed.”

But for Wright, he wants confirmation as soon as possible.

In fact, he thinks Aubameyang signing a new deal will be the best piece of business his former club does this summer and that’s despite links to Thomas Partey and Houssem Aouar.

“He will be their best signing,” Wright said on Match of the Day. “I’m going to see papa Aubameyang tomorrow, they have to sign, simple as that, and I’m not going to leave.

“We have to sign that guy.”

Lacazette  I’m really happy at Arsenal

Alex Lacazette made history on Saturday when he found the net in our 3-0 win at Fulham.

Our France striker is the only player to score the first goal in two different Premier League seasons – 2017/18 and 2020/21.

After the game, Laca discussed his future as well as the key moments in a satisfying victory:

on the performance…
Yes, it was the best way to start the season. We wanted to win today and get the clean sheet. Defensively I think we did some good stuff and respected what the coach wanted. At the end, we won so everyone is happy today.

on Mikel’s comments throughout the game…
He wants us to be perfect. We work a lot in the week for this kind of game because we know it’s really important for the season. Yeah, we have to respect what we wants.

on competition for places…
Yes, for the team, for the club. We have a lot of big ambition. We know Auba is going to score a lot of goals this season. I want to help the team to be on top, I know it’s my job. It’s not for me to [just] play and do the link-ups so I will try and do my best this season.

on if he is happy at Arsenal…
I am really happy. It’s only the press that says I’m not happy. From the beginning I’ve said I am happy at Arsenal and I want to play and win titles. We won a title last month so I am happy with Arsenal.

on why Arsenal’s away record has improved…
Yes, we want to be aggressive with the ball and without the ball. We just want to improve in every aspect of the game. This is why we work every day, every week, to be better.

on if Arsenal are now ready to challenge for the top four…
I don’t know if we are ready, but we’ll try to. Every day we work a lot to try and earn a place in the top four.
