Arsenal Live : Alexis Sanchez decisions to return to Arsenal

Former Manchester United star Alexis Sanchez has provided an insight into just how little time it took for him to regret making the move to the club.

United struggles

Chilean international Sanchez of course swapped the Emirates for Old Trafford in January of 2018.

On the back of a scintillating stint in north London, during which he established himself as something of a cult hero amongst the Arsenal faithful, the gifted attacker came to the decision that his desires would be better fulfilled on the red half of Manchester.

To say that Sanchez’s call subsequently proved ill-judged, though, would be putting it lightly.

The former Barcelona man went on to endure a nightmare 18-month spell with the Red Devils, during which he looked an absolute shell of the world-beater who had previously lit up the Premier League landscape.

Sanchez, simply put, failed to deliver in any way, shape or form in a United jersey.

All told, across 45 appearances over his season-and-a-half at Old Trafford, the experienced South American notched a paltry 5 goals.

‘Things you don’t realise…’

As such, it came as little surprise when Ole Gunnar Solskjaer sanctioned a loan move away from the club for Sanchez last summer, with the 31-year-old having since gone on to find a new permanent home for himself in Italy, with Inter Milan.

And, as outlined above, as Sanchez gears up for the new Serie A season, he this week provided a fascinating insight into his difficult time in Manchester.

Speaking on a post on his official Instagram account, the Chilean opened up on a number of the problems he faced during his time at Old Trafford, including the mental impact of being both dropped by Jose Mourinho, and targeted by the media.

Undoubtedly the most striking aspect of Sanchez’s discussion, though, was the revelation that, following just a solitary training session with the Red Devils, he made contact with his representative, to explore the (completely unrealistic) possibility of returning to Arsenal:

‘I accepted the opportunity to go to United, it felt tempting and it was something good for me, I liked this club a lot when I was a kid. Eventually I signed but I didn’t ask for information on what was happening inside the club.’

‘Sometimes there are things that you don’t realise until you get there, and I remember the first training session I had, I realised a lot of things.’

Sanchez continued:

‘After the session I got home and I told my family and my agent ‘can you not rip up the contract to go back to Arsenal?’. They laughed, I told them there’s something that doesn’t sit right, it doesn’t seem good.’

‘But I already signed, I was already there. After the first few months I carried on having the same feeling, we weren’t united as a team in that moment.’
