The three players Arsenal could sell to fund Houssem Aouar transfer for Mikel Arteta

Mikel Arteta has cut a frustrated figure when asked about Arsenal’s transfer activity in recent weeks.

Ongoing changes behind the scenes at the Emirates Stadium mean that several possible deals are yet to be resolved despite progress being made on a deal for Gabriel Magalhaes from Lille. Raul Sanllehi and Freddie Ljungberg have both left the club in recent weeks which means that there will need to be decisions made off the pitch as well as on it in a busy transfer window.

Despite improvements on the pitch, Arteta will be eager to add further quality to the squad this summer and central midfield has been frequently reported as a key area of interest.

The continued uncertainty over the finances involved in bringing Thomas Partey to North London has resulted in other options being identified to add strength in the middle of the pitch.

And, after several impressive performances in the Champions League, Houssem Aouar has emerged as hot property amongst top European clubs. While the Gunners could face stiff competition to sign the 22-year-old, his quality in midfield would add a different dimension to the midfield and offer a long-term option for Arteta.

If the Gunners are to compete for Aouar’s signature in this transfer window, they could be forced to sell multiple first-team players to finance a move.

Matteo Guendouzi

There appears to be no way back at Arsenal for the French midfielder after he was involved in an incident after the loss to Brighton back in June.

While Guendouzi possesses valuable qualities in midfield, it is understood that his working relationship with Arteta is far from perfect. As a result, moving on this summer could be best for all parties involved.

Given that he is only 21 and has a relatively high development potential, plenty of clubs should be willing to invest in Guendouzi and could perhaps get him at a cut-price rate. Despite clubs looking to haggle, Arsenal should still be able to make a sizable profit on the £8million they paid for him back in 2018.

Lucas Torreira

Selling two central midfielders in one transfer window may only be possible if Dani Ceballos is afforded another year at the Emirates Stadium on loan.

While Torreira and Guendouzi aren’t in Arteta’s primary plans, there needs to be depth in such a physically demanding position. So, if Ceballos and another midfielder arrive this summer, selling the Uruguayan could help fund a move for Aouar.

His contributions under Arteta have been somewhat limited due to the emergence of Ceballos and Granit Xhaka as a midfield pair and moving on may be a possible resolution.

Arsenal have given the midfielder permission to leave, according to Gazzetta dello Sport , amid interest from several Serie A sides.

The 31-year-old attacking midfielder has enjoyed a loan spell with Roma in Serie A and appears to be happy in the Italian top flight. Given that his loan spell was extended to the end of August, it is likely that he spends the 2020/21 campaign away from the Emirates Stadium.

However, moving him off on a permanent deal would be beneficial for financing a move for Aouar. Both a transfer fee and decreased wage bill would enable more financial means in what is already a difficult transfer window for the club to navigate.
