Mikel Arteta set to target Three players to take advantage of the firesale at Barcelona

The Catalan giants are set for a summer of change after their humiliation in the Champions League.

It was a scoreline you had to read twice to believe: Bayern Munich 8-2 Barcelona.

Carles Alena has struggled for first-team football at Barcelona

The Spanish giants have defined an era of European football, but their recent Champions League showings have denoted a side in decline, and it is not something the demanding fans at the Camp Nou will settle for.

Wholesale changes are expected at the club this summer, and that could allow Arsenal to sneak in.

Talk of Lionel Messi leaving shouldn’t concern the Gunners, they wouldn’t be able to afford his astronomical wages, but there are potential deals to be done.

With that in mind, here are three players Arsenal should consider signing this summer from Barcelona to bolster Mikel Arteta’s squad.

Jean-Clair Todibo

If there is a pressing need at Arsenal this summer it is at centre-back.

Todibo spent last season on loan at German side Schalke, but they opted not to exercise the purchase option in the deal.

A talented ball-playing defender, few will contest that there are some weaknesses that he needs to iron out.

The most notable is his defensive positioning, but given Arteta’s focus on details and micro-managing players, he could be the perfect project defender.

As a French speaker, he could also form a quick understanding with William Saliba, who is expected to be a big part of the side next season.

Carles Alena

There remains speculation surrounding the future of Dani Ceballos at Arsenal, but in the meantime, Arteta should move for Carles Alena.

A La Masia product, Alena is a wonderfully gifted midfielder that is not only versatile but also a keen dribbler with an eye for a creative pass.

He could be the ideal player to help overhaul Arteta’s central midfield options, and if he can apply a structure to his play and focus Alena, it could be hugely beneficial for the player.

He’s unlikely to cost a huge sum, so could be a bargain pick-up for Arteta and the kind of player he builds the future of the team around.

Philippe Coutinho

The Brazilian star has been heavily linked to Arsenal due to his agent being Kia Joorabchian, who represents Gunners first-team players David Luiz, Cedric Soares and Pablo Mari, as well as new signing Willian.

As a loan deal, signing Coutinho would make a great degree of sense for Arsenal.

He has no future at Barcelona, who paid £142 million to sign him from Liverpool in January 2018, and a return to the Premier League would most likely be his preferred destination.

He would offer Arteta something a bit different in the final third, and although he works best on the left-wing cutting in, he could be used in several different roles for the Gunners.
